Strategic Communications: summit on sexual violence

In 2014, I traveled to London with Physicians for Human Rights for the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict. I worked with our program team to come up with a comprehensive strategic communications plan that included media relations, social media, and visual and written content. Here are a few examples of my work around the event:

Media relations: I came up with key messages, identified story ideas and successfully generated media coverage leading up to, during and after the summit. Coverage included Agence France-Presse (AFP), the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC)the Institute for War and Peace ReportingThe LancetNPR, Radio French InternationalThomson Reuters Foundation (here and here) and the Toronto Star. I prepared staff and our partners for speaking with the media and coordinated all on-site media interviews.

I also used the summit as an opportunity to generate coverage about MediCapt, a mobile app designed to help collect evidence in sexual violence cases. Coverage included the British Medical Journal, Fast Company, International Business Times, Le MondeNew ScientistThink Progress and Yahoo Tech.

Photography: My photos were used in social media posts, donor communications, a newsletter (the first four photos in this e-news) and an annual report (page 12 of this PDF).

Social media:  I engaged staff in a social media campaign using the summit’s #TimetoAct hashtag, and live-tweeted during many events and panels.

Writing: I wrote materials such as our internal talking points, a media advisory, and authored a piece for Thomson Reuters Foundation after interviewing some of our African delegates.
